Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel
Barter Players
Summer 2018
Directed by: Katy Brown
Costumes Designed and Made by: Shea O'Neil
Much of my work has involved some crazy challenges. The challenge for this show was: how to turn a cast of 14 actors into multiple dirt digging machines on a $700 show budget. Dir. Katy Brown (Barter Players Artistic Director) wanted to stray from the stereotypical colors you find in the childrens book version of this story. We decided on a very gritty and real "depression" era costume shape and color palette. In a way... we made Mary-Anne, the can-do female steam shovel, the original Rosie the Riveter.
