Call of the wild
Barter Players
Adapted by Catherine Bush from the Jack London Novel
Directed by John Hardy
Costumes Designed and Made by Shea O'Neil
Call of the Wild was one of, if not, the most minimalistic design I did for a show in my tenure as the Player designer. John Hardy just wanted the use of a scarf to be the signifier for the changing of characters (from person to dog in a sleighing harness to moose.) I personally knit all of the scarves for each of the actors. It made it easier to control the feel of the show and gave all of these different colors of yarn the same quality of feel, making them feel more uniform. I mainly used the scarves and hats as the full looks with their base costume... but knowing my design style there were a few costume pieces that I had to squeeze into some really tight changes (with quick-rigging within an inch of its life of course.) Mercedes (woman with the plaid leg-o-mutton sleeves) was the most extensive of a build that I embarked on in this design. The director wanted the fast-paced nature of the show to not be slowed down by needless changes and pieces. It was a fun and exciting challenge to my design style that I will forever be thankful for.
